A very largu .assemblage was present at the Theatre lust evening to hear Miss Murcutt’s lecture on “America and the Americans.” The chair was taken by the Rev, Dawson Thomas. The lectures® dealt with her subject in a masterly manner, and her verdict was eulogistic of our “cousins” across the sea. She pictured a mighty land, pulsating with industry, and endowed with many great democratic institutions, commencing with a wonderfully developed free educational system. She described the working people as the most skilled, best housed and most highly paid people in the world. The component parts of the nation were touched upon, and one was led to admire the statesmanlike grip which had welded the hc-mongeneous mass into one harmonious whole.
A very satisfactory test was undergone yesterday, at the upper: end of Gladstone Road, by the new road roller, with scarifier attached. The scarifier consists of a heavy casting, with wheels at each end, manipulated by a screw to regulate the depth to which the tines may bo set. The tines, which break up the road surface very effectively, are four'in number at each end, only one set being used at a time. After the scarifiers have done their work, harrows are used to level the surface for the spread of metal and the roller completes the operation by hardening the surface. The scarifier is of the Magdeburg type, the advantage of which is that there are no springs or complicated partb in its construction, so that it is not liable to get- out- of order. The Borough Engineer .(Mr. E Harvey Gibbon) was very pleased with the results attained yesterday, and anticipates excellent work as soon as metal supplies come to hand.
