A remarkable series of circumstances, says the Evening Post- of August Ist, lias happened in connection with vessels owned by Stuart Bros., of Glasgow, who, own the ship Melville Island, on which an explosion occurred ou Tuesday night. The Norfolk Island and Pitcairn Island belong to the same proprietary. The Norfolk Island sailed from Leith Roads for Capetown on the 6th July, 1901, with a cargo of coal. The cargo became heated, and there followed an explosion, the vessel being burnt out. She was sighted on the 17th November, 1901, by the Erin’s Isle, and was driven ashore on the rocks at the Island of Tristan d’Acunha. The crew was picked up. In July of last year the Pitcairn Island caught fire, .the Naval Court at Valparaiso being of opinion that the outbreak was caused by spontaneous combustion among tow shipped at Dunedin.
San Francisco advices state , that the collapse of the Oceanic Steamship Company is close at hand. The Union Trust Company, as trustee for the bondholders, is' preparing foreclosure proceedings to wind up the affairs of the company, and to sell its five steamers, the Ventura, Sierra, Sonoma, Alameda and Mariposa/ for the benifit of the bondholders, who hold 2,405,000d0l of o per cent, bonds. It is stated that if the holders of the bonds get ol) cents on the dollar they will be fortunate. The fi% - e vessels wall be sold to the highest bidder, subject to the approval of the Court. The Spreckels people, as holders of 26,449 shares of stock, are in control of the company. They are in default for last January’s semi-annual interest, amounting to 65,170d01. While they have ail equity of six months in which to pay, this interest, they have already given notice that they will not pay any interest on the bonds. Hence the foreclosure The reason for their attitude is their statement t-hat the company owes them an overdraft for about 2,000,000d01, which it cannot pay.
