FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

THE AUCKLAND-ROTORUA TRAIN COMES TO GRIEF. A FORTY-FEET DROP. Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 4. A serious accident occurred between 8 and 9 o’clock on Saturday night on a goods train bound from Auckland to Rotorua. The train, a long one, with two engines, a large number of trucks and a passenger’s carriage, was ascending a steep grade three miles on the Rotorua side of Putaruru, when all the trucks, carriage, and guards’ vans became detached from the engine, and went down the hill at a terrific pace till reaching a culvert, when they went over the embankment into a gn]l3 T 10ft below. J. Lowe, guard, was killed. He never became conscious, and died in three-quarters of an hour. James Dwyer, assistant guard, sustained a broken arm and other . injuries. Tyer, assistant guard, broke bis arm and received other injuries. Kingdom, platelayer, was injured internally,. and sustained concussion ;>f the brain. Dwyer resided at Mt. Eden and Tyer at Auckland, and Kingdom at Putaruru. Of the four passengers in the train none were injured, although the carriage went over the embankment,

One of the engines .brougli the injured men here, arriving at 4 o’clock this morning. The injured men are at the Sanatorium. Dr. Engelberger, of Matamata, one of the passengers, rendered valuable aid to the injured. Lowe was a favorite guard, and greatly respected. Several of the trucks contained cattle, and many were injured. The accident happened at a place known as Bell’s siding, where a hew line has been constructed. No jiarticulars are available as to tho cause of the accident. Engines were driven by Taylor and Cooper. The train was due at Rotorua at 8 o’clock, and was running late. All file trucks, carriages, and guards’ vans are greatly damaged.
