WELLINGTON, last night. The following were the tenders for the Arthurs Pass tunnel: Kirkwood, Kerr and Co., London, £688,215; Drummey, Arrowtown, Otago’ —628.732; John McLean and Sons, Wellington, £599,794 (accepted). Air. Murdoch McLean, who contested the Parnell seat against Mr. Lawry at the last- general election, will not be a candidate at the' next general election. The work involved in tr.n piercing of tlio Arthur’s Pass tunne! will keep Air. AlcL can so busy during the next five years that lie wdl have no time to devote to politics. Competent authorities think tl,at 'I Ml, goes well and no unforeseen difficulties, such as an inflow of " a.ter, are met with, the contractors for the tunnel should make a clear pi ofit' of £140.000. It- is recognised on all hands that the work is in excellent hands.
