The Otago Daily Times says;—An introsting fact full of significance is the extent to which the parcel post is being utilised by mercantile houses in AVcllington and elsewhere for sending hats, lack, scarves Itios, and other merchandise to their agents and customers in Dunedin. These articles arc now being sent by parcel post instead of as freight by steamer. The Dunedin postal authorities report a tremendous increase in the parcels department, no less than 234 bags and boxes of goods passing through their hands recently in one day. They ascribe this to the fact that the public is realising tlio impossibitily of articles going astray or coming to grief per parcel post. It is like posting a letter, and the goods 1:01110 through without paying wharf rates or the 6s per ton harbor dues. Tins naturally affects the harbor authorities and steamship lines, who however, seem unable to move in the matter at present. All that can'bo done is to try and • induce the Government tq refuse tQ parry, per parcel post, goods of a certain clasg or above a certain quantity, except as samples, which practically meant one article of a kind at a time. The subject will probably be brought before a meeting of the Otago Harbor Board shortly.
The Wesley Scliolroom was crowded to excess last evening when an enjoyable concert was given in aid of the choir funds. The Rev. Griffin acted as Chairman. Brokenshire; song. “In the Chimney Corner” Mrs. Colebourne. A most amusing dialogue, “A Leg of Muttlon” concluded a uniformly good programme.. The worries of “Mrs Juvenile” ! over 'servants provided plenty of scope for hearty laughtery • and all the characters were well sust tained. Mrs. C. East (as f, Mr?, Juvenile”) and Miss. Brokenside as the irate cook were perhaps the most successful, the other Toles being played .by Misses Sussex, Featherston, Holmes, 'find .Gentle, ' Messrs. Fitzell, Vincent, Miller, and C. East.
