WELLINGTON; last .night. “Do not any longer Taihoa,” is ; ‘|o concluding supplication of a petition from Tupu Taingakawa and other natives which was presented to the House to-day by Mr. Ilerries. The petitioners, who content themselves with few words, ask the House “To experess to us your word of consent that you will give to us ourselves the administration of our lands under the mana of the Treaty of AVaitaugi and the New Zealand Constitution Act of 1852, or will you on the other hand state that you will not give to us the power to administer our lands.”
DROUGHT IN THE SOUTH. It AIN WANTED IN CANTERBURY Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, yesterday. Owing to the unusually dry weather there is no subsoil moisture, and the land is entirely dependant on rain showers. Feed is very scarce, and stock likely to fare badly unless the spring growth comes early. Heavy and continuous rain is necessary, but this would prove disastrous to young lambs, though it would be the salvation of stock generally.!' No autumn sowing lias been done, and now ploughing is almost impossible through the absence of subsoil moisture. The chances are that unless frequent rains occur there will be a-" disastrous drought througlmi-t the province. To•dav there js* bright sunshine.
