In replying to tho. anti-gambling deputation tne Premier said ho did not mind candidly saying that tno proposal in last year’s Bill to give one per cent, of totatisator investments to local charities was put in advisedly and with a viow to gotting legislation on the Statute Book. A Voice: It’s a had proposal. Sir Joseph: The gontleinaii behind inn says it is had. I think it is-. (Hoar, hoar.) We can leave it out of tho Bill this time. As to gambling in hind, which one of the doputation had mentioned, tlio place tor that was in tlio Land Bill. The solution was cheap fares and rapid means of communication so that people could get out of congested areas. Revert,ing to the main question he said that some improvements had been made in tho Bill and lie hoped the deputation would recognise that it was a sincere attempt to deal with the whole question of gambling. The point ns to whether anything should he done to prevent- newspapers publishing dividends on races could ho again put before his colleagues. He believed newspaper proprietors would do everything they could to improve flic present condition of affairs.
