AN EXTRAORDINARY AFFAIR.
FIFTEEN STRAW-STACKS BURNT. Press Association.
GORE, last night. A rather extraordinary occurrence is reported from Riversdalo. This morning a number of fires wero observed over tho plain. A settler on making investigations saw a man deliberately setting fire to several straw-stacks. The settler obtained assistance, but in tho meantime the man reached the next farm and set fire to three oat-sheaf stacks, also several straw stacks. Two of tho victims met and secured him. In all ho burned 15 stacks valued atf ovor £4OO. Tho man was brought to Goro to-night for medical examination, seemingly being a lunatic. Ho arrived in the district several days ago. He is about 50 years of ago, gives his name as Georgo Murray and states .that he has a wife and three children in Dunedin.
