“But for beef and beer,” declared Lord Burton at the Brewers’ Society Conference, “we should never have succeeded in creating for this country tho position it Held among the nations of the, world.” But (remarks a London writer) why drag in beef?
The Otaki Sanitorium, the latest weapon to wage war against consumption is now in active operation, it was opened only on 17th June, hut there are already fourteen patients iu, including four women. There is accommodation for thirty, and as soon as the genial days of summer draw near, it is expected that there will be more applicants than can he accepted. The institution, which is under tho control of the Wellington District Hospital Board, is admirably conducted and appointed (says the “Post’), a special feature being the electric plant and the water supply, which also serve the Otaki Hospital adjacent, and cost about £IOOO. Mr. G. Willis, secretary to the board, who has just returned from a visit of inspection, found everything to be working most smoothly. The patients are happy and contented, and with about a hundred acres to wander over at will, they get the full benefit of the fresh air cure. There is no lack of recreation. Just now they are enthusiastically improvising golf links, over which they play the game with an enthusiasm that amply counterbalances any shortcomings ill the way of science. There are no advanced
“cases” in tho sanitorium. Only those in the early stages of the disease are admitted, the aim being to cure. Patients from within the Wellington Hospital district, if qualified for admission, are taken in for just what they can afford to pay. Some pay nothing, while others contribute up to as much as 30s a week.
