COLONIAL CHALLENGE SHIELD
A further impetus lias been given to hockey by the Now Zealand Hockey Association giving a very handsome shield for competition among tlio affiliated associations. Tho shield lias been provided in place of the match North v. South Island which lias proved unsatisfactory. Tho rules governing contests for tho shield have been received by tho Poverty Day Hookey Association, and are as follows: — • ' Tlio Shield shall ho n Challenge Shield, and shall be open to all Associations affiliated to tho N.Z. Hockey Association, subject to tho following rules: 1 At the end of 1907 season the Alanagement Committee of the N.Z. Hockey Association shall allot the shield to tho Association whose representative team it considers to have the best record for the j;ear. 2 Such Association to hold it subject to the right of challenge by an affiliated Association, hut not to he called on to play more Challenge matches in the season than tlio Alanagement Committee of the N.Z. Hockey Association considers advisable, provided that at an Association meeting the holder of the Shield in the course of its ordinary Association matches shall have the right to declare beforehand to the N.Z. Hockey Association and to the Association holding tho Shield that such match shall also he a Challenge match.
3 All Challenge matches shall he played on tlio ground of the holder of the Shield for the time being, unless -otherwise mutually agreed to by the two competing Associations, and approved of by the N.Z. Hookey Association.
4. Any Association desiring to play a. Challenge match with the holder sliaL give notice to the N.Z. Hockey Association of such desire not later than tlie’enji of August in each year.
5. The N.Z, Hockev Association to have tho right to declare, which, if any, of the challenges shall be allowed.
6. A Challenge match to ho played on a date to he arranged by tho Association engaged, but failing such arrangement, the date of playing to be fixed by the N.Z. Hockey Association. No match, however, shall he played after the last Saturday in September, and not earlier than the Ist of Marcli. 7 In all matches for the Shield the referee shall he appointed by the N.Z. Hockey Association. S In the event of the scores being even at the conclusion of the game, tho play shall proceed as follows: A. After five minutes interval quarter hour spells shall bo continued until a score is registered, teams must change ends each quarter hour. 9. Anv dispute arising in connection with competitions for this Shield shall be decided by the Management Committee of the N.Z. Hockey Association.
10. Tho Association holding the Shield shall insure it against loss bv fir? or any other cause in the name of the N.Z. Hockey Association for tin- sum of £25, and shall hand the policy and renewal receipt to the Hon. Secretary of the N.Z. Hockey Association. . ... . ....
