About four million bottles of pickle's are consumed every year in the United States. St. James’ church, Exeter, ’is said ti be haunted. Curious sounds are heard sometimes like the chanting of psalms just before the beginning of the morning and evening services. Recently (states the Wellington Post) Detective Cassells, of Wellington. was sent across to Sydney to bring back au alleged debtor. In that matter lie had no difficulty. The Sydney police already held the man under surveillance. That was all right. But one day a police inspectoi sent for the detective, and asked him if he knew a certain person, then iu custody, who was suspected of having “broken gaol” at Lyttelton. Mr. Cassells replied that all he knew of the man was that ho was present i,l Court when he was convicted and sentenced to a long term of imprisonment. “Can you identify that man?” asked the inspector. “Well,” said Mr. Cassells, “you’d hotter place him amongst a crowd of father fellows in the yard, and if ho is the man I am thinking of. I’ll pick him without any possibility of mistake.” On the following morning some twenty persons were ranged up in the yard adjoining the Sydney Water Police Court. Mr. Cassells, in the presence of several police officers, walked down the lino, and when he came to one man, slapped him on the shoulder and said. “Hullo, old man, you’re here again.” The man so accosted denied the impeachment, but subse_quently admitted that ho "'as the person required by tho law to return to New Zealand,
