PRESENTATION TO MR. CROMPTON.
A largo gathering, representing tlio commercial element of the Poverty Bay district, assembled*at the Farmers’ Union Club rooms last evening, the occasion being a presentation to Mr. Crompton. Mr. Bain'was elected chairman, and said that ho had known Mr. Crompton for about 20 vears. Mr. Crompton and he had travelled on the road during most of that time, and lie could testify to tho amiable disposition and good-fellowship of his friend. One trait in Mr. Crompton’s character which had impressed him very much was his devotion to his parents. He had great pleasure in presenting to Mr. Crompton, on behalf of the commercial travellers and the business people of Gisborne, a handsome roll-top office desk and an offico chair. He honed Mr. Crompton would find the desk to be a useful article, and that the presentation nlate which was attached would remind him of the donors. Ho felt sure that Mr. Crompton would have a prosperous and happy future. The chairman, continuing, said those present could not lot the occasion pass without showing their appreciation of Mr. Murray’s many good qualities, and asked him to accept a small present for Mrs. Murray as a token of their esteem.
The following gentlemen also spoke in high praise of the principals of tho new firm, Messrs. Murray and Crompton, expressing pleasure that men of their business capacity had decided on Gisborne as tho most promising in which to start business:Messrs. AVm. Pettie, J. F. Pettie, Noale, Riach, G. K. Pasley, AlcGlashan, Hennessy. Amliridge, Billlock. Preston, Longlands, and Burton.
Mr. Crompton thanked the gentlemen present for the presents and for their kind remarks. He said that Gisborne was famous for its hospitality. and he would long remember the kindness of his friends in making him the presentation. Mr. Murray, in conveying his thanks to the company for their generous gift to Mrs. Murray, evoked hearty applause bv his facetious remarks.
A number of songs were sung during the evening, the following gentlemen contributing: Messrs. F. J. Tent. Outred, Jacobi, and M. Lewis.
Air. Oram, who presided at the piano during the greater part of the evening, was heartilv thanked by the chairman and tlie company. Tlie evening, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present, terminated with the singing of “Anld Lang Syne.”
