TARIFF PROPOSALS.

SUGGESTED AMENDMENTS. THE CHIEF ALTERATIONS. (Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, last, night. Tho principal alterations in tho tariff are:— Almonds, free; boiled sugars and confectionery, 3d por lb, instead of 2d. Dried fruits, currants, dates, figs, prunes, raisins, maize, cornflour, - mustard, spices, unground sugar, treacle, and molasssos, tartaric acid, cream of tartar, soda (carbonato and bi-carbon-ate), cotton piece goods of all kinds, linen piece goods and unions of same, window glass (crown and plate), paper hangings, load in shoots, vegetable oils in bulk, sporting powder, are all -free after October 31st.' The following are reduced from 25 to 20 per cent:—Lace ribbons, silks, Bri-tish-grown tea (must bo in packages) over 51bs to bo free";

Chemicals, drugs, patont medicines and sarsaparilla are raised 5 por cent. Opticians’ and dentists’ instruments, formerly freo, will now pay 20 per cent. Hosiery is raised from 20 to 25 per cent.

Mouldings of all kinds are raised from 15 to 20 per cent. Billiard furniture reduced from 25 to 20 per cont. Handbills, programmmos and printed advertising matter are raised from 20 per cent ad valorem to three ponce per half ton and lino blocks, formerly free, now pay 25 per cent. Shot and cartridges are raised from Is 6d to 2s Gd per 100. Cash registers raised from 10 to 20 per cont. Hydraulic cranes, formerly freo, pay 20 per cent. Electric machinery and appliances, gasometers and gas-making'apparatus raised from 10 to 20 per cent. Iron pipes over 5 inches in diameter raised from 5 to 20 por cont. Motor cars, formerly paying 20 por cent, now como in free.

Potatoes pay £1 por ton instead of 20 per cent. Blue is reduced from 2d to Id per lb.

Candles are raised to lkl instead of Id per lb. Cork, cut, is reduced from 20 per cent to freo.

Paraffin wax is raised from 3d to Id.

Food preservatives, maltino, elilorodyno and water-hardening chemicals are taken from the free list and included as drugs. Magic lanterns, cinematographs and like instruments are raised from free to 20 per cent. Locomotives, formerly freo, are included as steam engines at 20 per cent.

Crudo gas oils, formerly free, pav id per gal.* Artificers’ brushes go from free to 25 per cent. The preferential schedules are largely extended, most of tho items now subject to duty or on the free list, except raw materials which cannot be produced ill British possessions, being included in them, which practically remain as before at 10 to 20 per cent.
