At a representative meeting held at Kawhia over 20 settlers attended to discuss the matter of a shipping proposal from an Auckland firm to start running a boat on tho co-oper-ativo princijile, tho firm putting m £320 if guaranteed a share of trade. Tho proposal was not entertained. A prominent settler said that while in Wellington recently he was promised by a firm there that tliev would send a boat fortnightly to deliver cargo at los per ton. Settlers were strongly in favor of supporting this proposal, all agreeing that they could buy cheaper and sell better at Wellington One speaker, Mr. Mackenzie, referred to Auckland’s lack of enterprise. remarking that Auckland people had not sufficient nluck or enterprise. A committee of settlers volunteered to canvass tho district and ~et support for the boat. The secretary of the N.Z. Shipowners’ Federation states that the federation has not identified itself with the proposed increase of freights in the N.Z. coastal trade in any shape or form, qnd the Press Association telegram is incorrect in this particular. According to its rules the asaociation could not enter a scheme having for its object the increasing of freight.
