Press Association. DUNEDIN, yesterday. Mr. Orchard is unable to come from Australia to judge the music at ilie competitions owing to the illness of his wife. Mr. Bayertz has been Appointed judge of the local events besides the elocutionary contests. Tlie judge of instrumental playing lias not yet been appointed. TIMARU, vesterday. Annie Jackson, better known as Madatno St. Vincent, was to-day charged with practising as a palmist. The defence raised was that the accused merely conducted experiments in spiritualism and thought transference. The case was dismissed. OAMAItU, yesterday. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning two local bakers, George Hepburn and Wm. Sinytlie, were convicted on separate charges of using inaccurate scales and weights below the standard. Each defendant ,vas fined £2 and 14s. costs. The charges were laid by the Inspector of Weights and Measures, and were .he result of an inspection on June 26th last.
WELLINGTON, yesterday. James Rowan, who was arrested in Sydney, was before the Court today on two charges under the Bankruptcy Act. One .information alleged that on June 22. las. Wellington within 12 months before presentation of a bankruptcy petition, accused quitted New Zealand and took with him part of his .property, valued at upwards of £2O. The second in fornation alleged that accused fraudulently removed part of his property co the value of £lO and upwards. Accused-was remanded till Wednesday bail being allowed. PALMERSTON, last night.
At! a meeting of the Council of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce it "was decided to interview the iVliniste;' regarding better telephone communication. between Palmerston and Napier ; that a movement he made to procure continuous telephone service for Palmerston; also a chief post office; that the Government he asked to send an engineer to survey the Kntarama River with a view to obtaining electric power for Palmerston and neighbouring towns,- that the Chamber co-operate with the Faxmillers’ Association in making representations with a view to the removal of the unfair 'tax imposed upon flaxmillers.
MARTON, Inst, night. At the Police Court to-day S. J. Gibbons /was committed for trial on a charge of inciting Norman May Atkinson to make a certain false statement to the police in connection with a breach of tho Licensing Act'. Bail was allowed, himself in £SOO and two sureties of , £250 each. Geo. Rosser was fined the full penalty of £lO for procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. CHRISTCHURCH, yesterday. - Another very heavy frost occurred tliis morning. All the water taps were were ice-bound. The weather is still very cold, with an easterly wind.
Mr. AV. G. Atack, editor of the Canterbury Times, has been appointed judge of the literary competition _in connection with the Home Industries International Exhibition essays. They were lost in Australia when Dr. Fitcliett, the first judge, left for England, but were found again, and Mr. Minson, Chairman of the Home Industries Committee, received them on Monday. There are about 150 essays. The weather is now beautiful, and not a breath of air. is stirring.
