When one considered the large sums of. money that linfl recently been wasted bv the Government •ill getting a band from England, in buying a useless lot of statuary in Rome, and in various other ways, while at the same time the country was crying out for roads and bridges, it made one advocate a change of policy.
Air. AV. F. Massey, AI.H.R., interviewed by a “Rost” representative alter a trip over the Alain Trunk route, said that. he could not, ol course, speak as ail expert, but he saw no supernatural obstacle to the rails being laid right- through by the end of 1908. The earthworks would certainly be finished by then, but he was not so sure of the viaducts. He emphatically denies tho allegation that the country is a desert. The soil where the'pumice is free, is rich, and timber will, in the oi>iiiion of a practical sawmiller, like All*. Alander. the member for Alarsden, serve the colony’s needs for a century. Art*. Massey adds that the worst of the land will be good sheep country. There are great scenic assets, and tlio line ought- to pay very well, especially m passenger traffic. Now that the end of the Alain Trunk line is in sight the acceleration of the Stratford connection must receive more attention.
