Finding Raisuli’s demands preposterous, the first negotiations failed, Kaid Mac-Lean returned to h ez. itaisuli wrote expressing regret anOmtimating he was prepared to accept tlio Sultan’s terms. At a second interview at Alcazar Sr H.. MacLeau noglected to enlist the assistance of two tribes which previously guaranteed secrecy of negotiations. Almost alone Sir H. Mat-Lean proceeded to tlie spot appointed bv Raisuli. Ti was surrounded by a large band. MacLean was powerless to refuse an lnvitation to proceed further to tne mountains.
