POULTRY FARMING.
Tlioro was a largo and enthusiastic J meeting hold last evening at Mr. Morrell’s store, Wliataupoko, when Mr. l!\ E. A. Gordon, Poultry Expert, gave an interesting and instructive address on utility poultry farming. In the course of his remarks lie touched upon the following subjects: Table poultry; the various methods of ’fattening; how to tell an old bird from a young one, dead or alive; the best foods for fattening; the best market for produce, Home or local; caponising; killing, plucking. cooling, shaping, packing, and grading; artificial and natural incubation (showing artificial incubation to bo the most profitable); the necessity of having vigorous breeding stock to produce vigorous chicks; the care of incubators and the best makes of same; how to make a home-made brooder equal to the best on the market; ducks, geese, and turkeys. A few words on the different diseases of poultry concluded the address, Mr. Gordon recommending a sharp tomahawk aiicl a hot fire for all serious ailments on a utility plant. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker for his very able discourse, which was oreatly appreciated hv his hearers, and regret was expressed that the Government experts do not deliver their lectures on similar lines. . . , Mr. Morrell also received a vote ot thanks for the use of his rooms. It was decided to hold a meeting next Monday night at Mr. Morrell s store for the nurposo of forming a Utility Poultry Association, to further tlio interests of poultry-farming in this district. Mr. Gordon will deliver an address on. poultry-farming at Makauri next Thursday.
