THE COOK MEMORIAL.

THE CONTINGENTERS’ NAMES. REMOVAL FAVOURED. Under date July 4th Mr. H.liill, Napier writes as follows; —Someone has been good enough to send to me a copy of your issue of the 2nd inst. containing a local to the effect that “there appears to bo a widespread desire that the names of the ‘Contingenters’ should be removed from the Captain Cook memorial and placed on some separate monument.” With this sentiment I fully agree. lam sure that no one wishes that the men who went out to South Africa' should bo forgotten. They did what is daily being inculcated should bo done in support, of the British Empire, and in the coming years the names will act as an incentive to others to “go and do likewise,” when duty calls. But the Cook Monument is a thing apart. It represents an Empire in the making, but the contingenters represent an Empire made. The two pictures are distinct, and I hope tho Contingentors themselves will agree to the substitution of three panels in the Monument to illustrate incidents in connection with tho coming of Cook, and celebrated men like Drs. Solaiuler and Banks. '" A pedestal bearing tho heading “For Empire and Duty.” followed by the names of the Contingenters and (late, would at once suggest inquiry from the .young folks and a story could he told that would be of permanent value, so that two pictures would bo provided for all time to ttell tiro future people of Poverty Bay of early' incidents that will stand out in far bolder rplipf when New Zealand has become a nation.
