Press Association. DUNEDIN, Saturday. The Inspector' of Police has been notified that Thomas Lingard shot himself this morning on, James Rees farm, Kartigi. AUCKLAND, Saturday. The Auckland Peace Association passed a resolution to ask to Government of New Zealand to suggest to the Imperial Government to open negotiations with the Powers interested to declare-a neutral ground on the earth's surface within the boundaries of the Pacific Ocean or part thereof, as defined by mutual agreement. CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Efforts are being made to secure the historical Maori war canoe Talieretikitilci for Christchurch museum. Air. W. G. Russell, chairman of Canterbury College Board of Governors, telegraphed to Sir Joseph Ward, Air. Carroll, and Air. Kaihau asking that it should remain. Mr. Carroll replied that as soon as the Hon Alahuta, the owner, arrives in Welj/ngton lie will see him on the subject and endeavor to induce him to consent. The canoe was one of the attractions of tlio exhibition.
I A mail who was fined 10s for drun.ltenness to-day had £IOO in his possession when arrested. The Magistrate advised him to bank it or he would be plundered. C. It. Burney was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for ob-' tabling money, on false pretences. He represented himself to be a brother of Mr. It. H. Boddington, manager of a sheep station in Marlborough. ' WELLINGTON, Saturday: According to a statement made by the Hon. Mr. Millar at a social i gathering last night there has been a larger increase in the number of unions in this colony than in any one year since 1890. The total increase of members of unions during last year amounted to 4600. These fi- , gures, the Minister said, evidenced the energy of those who had the labor movement at heart.
