A BARQUE ABANDONED.

Press Association. AUCKLAND, Saturday. A private cable reports that the Norweigan barque Viking has been abandoned., and the death of Captain Harold C. Pctterson and his wife, to whom he was married just before leaving Auckland for New York on May 2. Mrs. Pettersou was the daughter of Mr. J. D. Stewart, manager of the Kauri Timber Companys mill at Hokianga. Nothing is stated as to the fate of the remainder 01 the vessel’s crew, which wa>.as follows : N. Clauson, first mate; N. McDonald, seamen The Viking’s cargo from Auckland was chief!v kauri gum, valued a: £45,000. " , , u AUCKLAND, last night. The Viking left Auckland with cargo valued at £45,000, consisting of 7205 cases and 31 sacks kauri gum and 83 packages merchandise. - The bulk of the gum was shipped by Messrs. L. C. Gillespie and Sons, who chartered the vessel. Their quota toalled 5955 cases, the estimated value of which was £38,000. The shipment was fully insured in a New York office. Messrs. G. V. S. Paterson and Co. shipped 1094 cases kauri gum. Messrs. S. AVinterbonne and Co. shipped tlie balance of the gum (150 cases and 31 sacks), of a total value of about £ISOO, and their risk was also covered by insurance. Messrs. Sliarland and Co. had 18 cases of drugs on board, and Messrs. J. ;r. Craig, Ltd., 64 packages of machinery. „ _ . . The Viking was built at Grimstad. Some three or four years ago slie was engaged in the timber trade between Kaipara and Hokianga and South Australia. She then went to Europe, and came to Auckland via South Africa, loading hero for New York. While in Auckland Captain Pettersen is stated to have valued the Viking, in which he w'as a part owner, at about £4OOO. It is believed that sho was uninsured. Messrs. Gillespie and Sons believe slie is the first gum ship that has either been wrecked or met with any serious accident. The barque was owned by the I etterson Line, of Aren dal. of which firm Captain Pettersen was a partner.
