RUNAWAY SAILORS.
A CHASE AND A CAPTURE. The master of the barquentine lima burst into the police station at 10 o’clock last evening in a perspiring condition, to invoke tlie aid of the force in catching four runaway sailors. It seemed that lie had been in pursuit but the Jack Tars bad too much pace for him and escaped over the Kaiti bridge. The Sergeant despatched Constable O’Hara in quest of the runaways. Three of the sailors, loaded with their baggage, were taking a spell near the bridge when Captain Olsen and the constable hove in sight. In tile scatter one man dashed through an adjacent hedge and the representative of law and order cautiously followed, hut darkness favored the reckless one who eluded capture, only his bundle being secured as a tfophy. Meanwhile the Captain was in hot pursuit of one of the quartette, but condition failing him tlio constable took up the running, and with success.
A Dane named Frederic Jenson could not pace it with the constable and was apprehended. He gave in quietly and walked in dejected fashion hack to the lock-up, carrying his ‘kit. Another of the crew was discovered near the bridge and the irate master wanted to give him in charge. “You have me locked up and I will got £SO damages for false imprisonment.” said the sailor, a typical English Jack ashore, “X am not a deserter; mv things are on board.” This staggered the Captain, who thereupon escorted him back to the ship. The other pair, with one swag between them, could not be found. They have evidently made off up country, on a preconcerted plan of action. Jensen, who reliised to give any information to (be Captain concerning his shipmates, will make his explanation to the Bench this morning. Tlie Captain intended to sail for Ivaipara to-day. so is greatly inconvenienced by being left shortlinnded.
