Mr. W. P. Monk has arrived in town to make arrangements for tlio soason of tho Julius Knight Dramatic Company which opens on Monday week.
Advico has boon reeoivod in town of tho death of Mrs. Annio Parry, wife of tho Rov. David Parry, at Carlton, Victoria, on 21st Juno. Tho Rov. Parry is well ’known locally and sympathy will bo felt for him m his sad bereavement. j . '
“That man was never thoroughly appreciated in Now Zealand,” the Hon. W. C. F. Carncross declared to tho Legislative Council on Jmjo 27th. “The late IS. M. Smith in a sense was a hero. Ho fought for success, and though it never ennio he still persevered and . continued his struggle.” Mr. Carncriiss said Mr. Smith put up with all sorts of robukes, and it was tho custom of some people to treat him lightly, but be could retaliate when attacked. “I believe,” Mr. Garncross added, “that he died of a broken heart, because ho could see no hope of achieving what ho attempted.”
