HORSE RACING.

STEEPLECHASE MEETING FIRST DAY.

Happily the wintry blast lilteu yesterday, morningj and the genial weather which set in was a pleasing augury for th success of the--Gisborne Racing Club’s Steeplechase Meeting. It had the effect of inducing people to take an outing, and the attendance on the first day was fairly up to the average. Despite the heavy rams early in the week the course was m good order, though a bit on the heavy side and the enclosure looked really well’ The general arrangements made by the secretary, Mr. Nasmith, and the capital day’s i sport provided enhanced the already.estimation in which the Gisborne Racing Club is held by the public an -. men alike. Speculation was brisk throughout the day. but the total investments on the maciiine, £5250, show a slight falling off as'compared with tho first day of last year’s fixture, when £OB6B was registered. The success of the first day promises an interesting second programme. ; The racing was first class, fields being good on the. whole, and some very fine finishes were a tribute to the handicappsr’s work. The jumping events were in especial favour. Tho Trial Steeplechase provided one of the most exciting finishes imaginable, and those who were privileged to witness it will not readily forget the spectacle. There were no serious mishaps but McGregor, who .got a 7 1 Ml r Onfinn in tine

nasty spill off Local Option m me big Steeplechase, had the misfortune to fracture his collar-bone. As he is engaged to ride in; the Aft ellington Steeplechase and other important events this is real bad luck for him. His injuries were attended to by Dr. Scott, the Club’s honorary surgeon, who was at his post whan required. Delaney, the rider of Vizier, and Barron Ivan’s pilot, sustained shakings through falls in the Trial-Steeplechase but rolled up at the weighing room, smiling. The stewards had an easy day, no inquiries of any sort being deemed necessary. In the absence of tho Hon. Captain Tucker, Mr H. Mattbewson acted as judge, Mr. C. O’Connor Mr. J. Chadwick lianclicapper, Mr. J. E. Whitby clerk of scales, Mr. A. Pritchard clei'k of course, and Mr. ftV. O. Skeet totalisator steward. The other officers of the Club are: —President, Hon. J. Smith’s Borax, 10.10, inc 151 b over (Delaney); 6(1 —Mr. R. Fraser’s Ivan, 9.7, (D. Barron). This was a most exciting evont, and the finish aroused great enthusiasm. In fact, it was declared to bo the finest race of the kind ever witnessed in this district. Ivan, Bullworth. Morpoth, and Morelia u went to the front in that order, but tlio lead alternated for the first round. Passing the stancjfc-Morpeth was sailing along, with Vizier and Morelni in attendance, Bullworth and Ivan folBorax reajrmost. Along the outer turn Vizier fell, and Borax was interfered with. Delaney, who piloted Borax, hastily dismounted to dislodge Arnott’s foot from the stirrup. but his services not being required, remounted and set off in pursuit of the others. Meanwhile the field was fairly close together, Ivan again moving up to the lead. With little room to spare ho blundered over the obstacle at the near turn, leaving Morpeth, Morehau, and Bullworth in that order to fight out the finish. They raced over the last hurdle abreast, but Morpeth was smartest on his pins. All three names were shouted as the winner as they raced down the straight. Bullworth did not belie his Bulldog breeding, for he worried home a victor by a nose, Morehau and Morpeth being locked together. It was hard to say which horse had won, and in the excitement the partisans were calling out the names of the different horses as the winner. When the numbers were hoisted, however, the judge’s decision was not questioned. Borax, for the reason stated, was 30 lengths in the rear. Time, 4 lain 3 3-5 see. Invested, ,£664. Dividends, £lO 13s on Bullworth, G.-i Morpeth, and 15s Morehau. WINTER OATS HANDICAP, Of 60 sovs; second 10 sovs. 1 mile and a distance. 237 —Mr. D. There was over 10 -minutes’ delay a.t the post, owing to “breakaways.” When “Go” was called the field got off fairly well. Gladsmuir made the running from Te Rahui and Annoyed, San Cruz and Reservoir Ting in the rear. To Rahui had collared the lead round the turn from Gladsmuir and Annoyed, whilst San Cruz was noted to be moving up. Passing the four-furlong post Mr. Morse’s mare was slightly ahead of the bunch, but San Cruz came with a great rattle and held a clear lead into the straight. Reservoir came up alongside Gladsmuir, but thereafter it was a hopeless pursuit. San Remo cleared out from the field and won by fully eight lengths from Reservoir, who beat. Gladsmuir by a length and a half. Annoyed and Te Rahui were close no. Time, 2 min 5i sec. Invested, £9-18; dividend, £3 12s.
