A theatre on a. new plan is being built in New York. The boxes and some of tlie best seats will be sold outright, and their owners can use them or sell them, as they please. The boxes have boon sold at the average price of £SOOO apiece. A specimen- of the “lesser” frigate bird has been presented to the Auckland Museum, by Mr. G. V. New, of Falii, Kaipara, it having been obtained by him at Pahi. Mr. New ■states that while driving somo sheep ho noticed a large bird, similar to a. hawk, endeavoring to carry off a young, turkey. He at' once started off on horseback, thinking to chase away the unwelcome visitor. Seeing it settle ill a little gully, he canterer up, and found himself almost on top of a large bird quito unknown to him. He succeeded in catching hold of it; by the, tip of one of its wings beforeqit could rise from the ground, and with a little trouble mastered it and brought it homo. Both the greater and lesser frigate birds, are not uncommon in tropical waters, but are seldom seen so far south as New Zealand, two or three instances of their occurrence being all that is known. They are appropriately called the "vultures of the sea,” and are remarkable for the large expanse of wing in proportion to the size of the body. The wings of tho specimen sent by Mr. New measures no less than oft 9in from tip to tip; but the length of the bird, from the head to tho tip of the tail, is barely 3ft.
