COURT STATISTICS.

Following is a return of business done at tho Magistrate’s Court, Gisborne, during the quarter ending Juno 30th. There were 68 sittings during tho period, 5G of which were presided over by tho Magistrate, and 12 by Justices of tho Peace. CIVIL BUSINESS.

Forty-threo civil cases wero heard by tho Magistrate, and 7 by Justices. Amount sued for,, £lslß 8s 9d; recovered, £998 ‘ss 9d ; applications heard in Chambers, 3; number of plaints entered, 151; number of distress warrants issued, 4; judgment summonses, 13; orders made on judgment summonses, 8; warrants of committal, 1; summonses, etc., served by bailiff, 166; distress warrants executed by bailiff, 15. The amount of civil fees paid in stamps was £96 12s, and the amount of licensing fees paid in stamps, £34. ,

CRIMINAL BUSINESS, Crimes against public order: 78 males and 4 females were apprehended, one of the former was discharged for want of evidence, and 77 males and 4 females were convicted.

Crimes affecting the administration of law and justice: (1 persons were apprehended under this head, 1 was committed for trial, and 5 were summarily convicted. Offences, against religion, morals, etc.: 5 persons were so charged, 1 was dismissed on its merits, and 4 were convicted.

Crimes against the person and reputation : 14 persons were accused in this class, 4 were discharged owing to insufficient evidence, 1 was dismissed, and 9 were convicted. Rights of property : 16 males and 2 females were summoned under this heading, 1 was committed for trial, 15 males and 2 females: were summarily convicted. There were no prosecutions during the period in the nature of thefts, conspiracies, and attempts to commit crime.

Offences against the Revenue Acts, Highway Acts, Health Acts, and other Acts relating to the social economy of the colony: 47 males and 3 females were charged under this heading, 1 male was discharged, 3 were and 43 males and 3 females were convicted.

Other offences! 69 males and 3 feniales were charged with various offences, 14 males were discharged, 4 males and 1 female were dismissed, 20 males and 1 female were summarily convicted, and 31 males and 1 female were otherwise dealt with.

- The total number of persons apprehended were 235 males and 12 females, 20 were discharged, 9 males and 1 female were dismissed, on their merits, 2 males were committed for trial, 173 males fcnd 10 females were convicted, and 31 males and 1 female were otherwise dealt with. OLD AGE PENSIONS.

During the quarter, 1 new claim was brought forward, 3 were received, 3 were granted, and 1 was refused ; 3 renewals were brought forward, 22 woro received, and 25 were .'granted.

The Magistrate Court returns of civil and criminal business for the quarter show little change as compareil with those of proceeding quarters, other than such fluctuations as 'yo' generally observable.
