AUSTRALIAN MAIL SERVICE.
United Press Association—Copyright MELBOURNE, July 2. A representative of the mail syndicate intimates that certain financial houses in London have arranged to supply the whole £1.750,000 worth of debentures in connection with the contract, consequently , Victoria’s guarantee may not be needed.
Received July 3, 9.20 p.m. MELBOURNE, July 3. Mr.-Deakin stated to-day that the Government, being convinced that the mail syndicate is unable to carry on except with indefinite delay, cabled to Captain Collins last- night -cancelling the contract. Tenders will be called for a mail service to-morrow. Arrangements are being made wtih the Orient Co. to carry on the service until the new tenders have been dealt with.
Received July 3, 11.50 p.m. LONDON, July 3. The Shipping Gazette understands the mail syndicate had arranged for the debenture issue.
