CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
Tho monthly mooting of tho Charitable Aid Board was hold last evening prior to tho Borough Council mooting, i’rosont: Tho Mayor, Messrs, Pettio. and Sheridan (Borough Counoil), and Mnttliows (County. Conned). Tho nianagor reported that there, were now lo inmates at tho Homo. Tho following gifts wore acknowledged wtili thanks: —Miss Lousloy, pudding, etc., Mrs. W. L. Roes and Mrs. 11. Campbell, pbriodionls. Tho Mayor: Tho number of inmates is looking up; it is wintor time. Mr. C. G. l’iosso, writing on bohalf of Mrs. Cramp, of tho Universal Dining Rooms, brought forward the case of an old pensioner who was asking for admission to tho Homo. Ho owed Mrs. Cramp £9 Is, credit having boon givon until ho received his ponaion. But tho stipulation that lie should hand over his pension to tho Board boforo obtaining admission to tho Homo would .prevent payment of his account. Mrs. Crnmn had on several previous occasions givon tho man credit, and ho had always paid up when tho pension camo to hand. In discussion tho Board could not see it's wav to take any responsibility for payment. Tho whole of tho pension was required to pay for tho man’s maintenance . Tho secretary was instructed to reply stating that tho Board could do nothing in the matter. Tho an mini balance, ns certified by tho Audit Department, was laid oil the table. . , Ail oxcollont account of tho institution was given by Mr. Pettio. He and Mr. Fenway had paid their first visit to tho Homo and were very favourably impressed indeed. The management seemed good, tho pli*ce was scrupulously clean, and the comfort of tho inmates appeared to be ! studied in every possible way. It was a wet day on which the visit was paid, so that additional credit was duo to the manager. Mr. F. Lysnar (County Council) and Mr. Mann (Borough Council) were appointed tho visiting committee for the ensuing month. Mr. Sheridan mentioned tho case of one of the Board’s proteges, boarded out, who required an operation. Tho child’s age was 13 or 14. and the Board had decided that it should be sent to the hospital. The guardians, however, had become v'ury much attached to the child and did not like the idea of parting with it, desiring instead that the Board should pay the cost of mi operation at home. ' It was pleasing to sec an attachment like this; this was the feeling the Board should encourage in regard to tho care of its proteges. He thought the Boards should comply with the request made; the cost of an operation would not bo very large. After somo discussion it was decided to leave the matter in tho hands of the Mayor.
