A BIG SWINDLE.

The Daily Express reveals a great swindle conducted bv Mrs. Elizabeth Horne, who represented herself to the daughter of the late Bisho - Cowio of Auckland, New Zealand—Mr. Catherine Christie, aged 80, - and a negro, who formed a syndicate- and worked on it in London and "(Paris for years for developing; 32,000, square miles of Madasgaschr, containing timber, gold, precious stones, and gems. The project- was conducted in the name of charity. Every investor was sworn to secreoy. Solicitor’s inquiries revealed the fact that officials of the French Government disavowed having given any concession. •'

AUCKLAND, yesterday. - In connection with the cablegram this morning, it is important to note that Bishop Cowie had only one daughter, who married Mr. Marshall, a , resident- of the Upper Waikato; and she is still living there. The woman referred to must have been merely a person posing as a daughter of the late-Bisnop Co\vie.
