Ail organised attempt is to be made to exploit the Canterbury plains for petroleum. A syndicate is being formed to acquire boring rights from the landholders in the Comity of Ashburton, between the Rakaia and Ilangitata Rivers, and between the main line of railway and the sea beach. The presence of petroleum has been noticed at sea between the Amnri Bluff and Cheviot, along the 100-fathom line, and _also in the Wailiao River, near Waimate. The syndicate intends to offer generous terms to those holding land in jthe proposed boring district for the right to examine the country for oil.
