A MAORI ELOPEMENT.

THE TIDES.

SHIPPING.

Tlic mysteries of the pakelia law appal strongly to tlic Maori, says “iUcrrutio.” I'liear of an instance of this, in the Urewera Country the othor (lay. One Maori man hail run olf with another Maori’s wife, and the matter being taken up by the respective relations and friends had reluctantly given “tawa.” in the form of a four-wheeled buggy. "With native shrewdness, however, ho made a proviso to the off eel. that if the exchange did not satisfy him later he had tlic right to send the iadv hack, and reclaim the buggy. So far all is harmony,', aiid here ends the first part of the tale.

For trouble followed. The original husband had no horse for the vchielo, and being of a genial and accommodating nature, lent it to a neighbouring pakeha. who bad horses. The pakeha drove it to and fro on his lawful occasions, often in front of the residence of its original owner, who having the proviso of mutual return in mind felt- strongly that this lending the buggy was not in the bowl ■ So he went to a lawyer and got letters written to the pakeha demanding the return of the buggy: whereupon the other Maori went- to a lawyer and got letters written to the pakeha commanding him not to return it. After they had bombarded the pakeha for some time with legal letters he got tired of this business, and a little afraid of being drawn into a logal squabble, so he left- the bugy near the empty whare of the Maori who had lent it him, and went his way. As it happened both Maoris had been almost similtaneousl.v warped by their respective counsel that possession was nine points of the law, and had hastened to get- possession. The original husband reached the buggv last, and found that' his rival bad taken it away, leaving the body of it on an intervening bank, while he took the four wheels over first. Now the. body of the buggy is with one claimant and the four wheels and the lady with the ether —and each Maori says he will have the law on the other, and there is a joyful sympathy throughout- the Urewera Country.

The loss of life, through the disaster which befell the Kia Oro is, the Taranaki Herald believes, the first in the history of the Northern Steamship Company. Three children were recently bitten by a full-grown bulldog ot Hastings, ft broke loose at St. Leonards, and attacked several people. A girl named Mary Willis was with her little sister, Alice, and bravely snatched her up and ran away, but the dog persistently followed her into her aunt’s house to the top room, biting the child’s leg in thirty places.
