Press Association. DUNEDIN, Saturday. Tho Chysanthemum Society at a special meeting last night decided to go into liquidation' and donate tho funds in blind to tho trustqos of the Art Gallery. This morning a logal opinion was given that last night’s meeting was invalid, because the society, being ail incorporate body, tho majority could not bind the minority. The secretary of tho society has been served with a copy of this opinion, and advised that if liquidation is-proceeded .with a restricting, injunction will be taken out.
INVERCARGILL, Saturday. The Shamrock Hotel .cases, which were adjourned lest tho issue of them might prejudice the appeal before the Supreme Court, were proceeded with yesterday.- Margaret McAuliffo pleaV , ded not guilty to a chargo of having sold whisky on April 10. Defendant was convicted and’discharged. ...She pleaded not guilty also, to a ejiarge of having kept whisky and beef for sale, and was convicted and discharged. Win. Meikle, Joseph Harriett, and Martin Campbell were charged with having assisted iu the sale, of whisky. Counsel for tho defence submitted that to assist in a sale one must be on the side, of the seller. The Magistrate reserved liis decision. CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Sir John Hall’s funeral yesterday was very largely attended. Nearly every resident in the district for miles around Hororata was present, even drays drawn by cart horses car-l-yin": whole families in tho funeral procession from Coalgate to the cemotory. Bishop Julius and Archbishop Scott conducted tho service. The names of prominent representative people present arid list of senders of wreaths fill a whole column of the morning , papors. , NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday. A representative gathering of Civil j servants last evening considered tho Civil Service superannuation scheme. A resolution was unanimously adopted that a petition he presented to the Houso praying that the measure bo passed during the, present session. WELLINGTON, Saturday.
Speaking at tho capping ceremony at Victoria Collego, tho Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister of Education, said in future it was intended to grant scholarships for original investigations into matters pertaining to the industries of New Zealand. There was a great scope in this sphere of study for the colony’s young men. AUCKLAND, Saturday. Thomas Vaughan was fined £SO and costs at Taumaranui for keeping liquor for sale there, and £l2 and costs for introducing liquor to a Maori kianga. .
