The Post Office advises .that telegraphic communication with Rawene. has been restored; and that the coach with the Nuhaka and Morero mails was unable to leave Wairoa on Thursday owing to the river being too high to allow the coach to negotiate Stewart’s crossing. Ijv the face of tales of severe weather elsewhere, and of gloomy predictions locally, Gisborne is favored with delightful atmospheric conditions. Probably the weather prophet’s “disturbance” altered its course. Whatever the reason, townspeople are quite content at the treatment accorded this contre. A visitor has no hesitation in giving Gisborne the palm for sunshine during the winter months. Perhaps it is early yet to speak too loudly; the clerk of. tlio weather takes such pleasure in upsetting the average man’s theories on weather.

The island of Ulie had most of its nativo inhabitants washed away. It is estimated E6O people perished in tli 0 group. Native food is scarce. A schooner foundered and most of the crew were drowned. Twenty persons were killed at Halief Island by the hurricanePress Association. AUCKLAND, yesterday. ' The gale abated during the night, and the weather was fine to-day. The Tarawera, due from Gisborne yesterday afternoon, did not arrive till 4 a.ro to-day, having been delayed by strong head winds and high seas. Last night the gale raged fiercely and large quantities of water were shipped. The alleyways were constantly flooded.
