UNITED BAND OF HOPE.

The rescusitat'ion of the Band ol Hope work, after an interlude of some years, is apparently a popular move to judge from the large assemblage at the Choral Hall last night, when the first programme of the Gisborne United Band of Hope was presented. The Rev Griffin presided and the audience included a large percentage of adults. The programme kept tilings moving with a pleasing vim for over an hour and a quarter, and the entertainment was a great success. The items included Hymn, “Hold the Fort;” prayer. Chairman; pianoforte solo, Miss Langford: 20 short- addresses, 2C boys; recitation, Miss Andrew; solo. Miss Glover; recitation, Master O. Church; violin solo, Master Itln'nesinitli; storyetUo, Mr. Grant-; duet, Misses Church; recitation, Miss V. Pearce; recitation, Miss Sussex; dialogue, “Tom AA’ildrake’s Folly,” Miss Fentherstoiic, Messrs. Chisholm Smith, Enver, Fitzell and Miller. Mr. Peckover, in the course of a sliqn address, • told the audience that 1" had kept the pledge for 69 years, ; statement- greeted with hearty ap plause; He was also a noii-smo'ker Though a man within 2 years of 80 lie could go as good a day’s work a; the next man; in fact lie would give way to very few people in Gisborne. (Applause.) Ho made an appeal tV: tho young folk to sign the pledge at once, and many acceded to the ' request. The Rev. Griffin mentioned, in concluding the meeting, that he had been a teetotaler for 53 years. (Applause.) He predicted many enjoyable evenings for the Band oi Hope, and notified that the next entertainment would be held in one month’s time.
