Mr. Justice Williams has asked the Otago University Council to consider the advisability of apointing some'one else.as Chancellor, as his other duties often prevented ■ him from attending tho meetings, blit "members with one voice said that the resignation.,was' quite uncalled for, and that they werr only too glad of his Honor’s presence whenever ho could manage to be with them.
The Waikouaiti County Council passed a strong protest against the alteration of tlie electoral boundaries, on the grounds, that by tho alteration the farming and country interest's would in "some cases bo dominated by boroughs and town districts. 2t was urged that if it was necessary to grant.' increased representation to the North Island, owing to increased population, this could be done without
interfering with South Island electorates,- as at present constituted, and it was further urged that constant alteration of the electoral boundaries destroyed community of Interest in the towns as well as country, and led to-confusion.
WESTPORT, Yesterday., At a mass meeting held in the Town Hall last evening, the Mayor presiding, to consider the Defenco Council’s decision to disband tlio“I” Battery, in which there lias boon some friction lately, "speakers strongly opposed the removal of guns, and the meeting decided to request the Defence, Council to allow them to remain a month, pending the formation of a new field battery. Riddell, S.M., to-day,, whether Syrian shopkeepers who have cheap trinkets and ornaments for sale could be -called jewellers, and so have to observo tho same .hours as jewellers. The Alagistrate held ill tlie case in point that tlie Syrian was not a jeweller and was not affooetd by the Gazette notice re jewellers’ hours. The case was dismissed.
HOKITIKA, yesterday. Mr. "W. T. Short, chief, clerk of the Roads Department,sitting as. Commissioner, lias been engaged the last two days bolding an inquiry into the pro-, portion of cost the interested local bodies should : pay towards‘ maintenance of the combined railway and traffic bridge over the Hokitika river. The Alagistrate’s Court: was engaged all day hearing charges of breaches of the Licensing Act. A number of offenders were fined 2s aiid costs for being on unlicensed premises during "prohibitetd hours, one publican the same amount for a technical breach of the Act.; another on two chorees of ;exposing liquor and permitting gambling on the premises was mulcted in a fine of £2 and costs. - NEW PLYMOUTH, yesterday.

John McMillan was brought before tho Police Court this morning to answer nine informations charging him with drawing at various times, 'out of the funds of the firm of AlcKenzie and Fleming, contractors, of Wellington, tho sum of £llsl, and- with unlawfully converting the same- to ,his own use. After, part hearing the case was adjourned till to-morrow afternoon, bail-being granted. AUCKLAND, yesterday. The Board of Education read a letter from the Assistant InspectorGeneral in reference to an application for appointment of a tutor for the Auckland training school, stating that n6t less than half the maximum number of; students and maximum ' amount of salaries had been reached, and it worked out at more than double the average paid in Wellington, Christchurch,'and Dunedin. Air. AJilner, principal of the Auckland school, stated that this was due to lack of accommodation. When the now school was available tlie cost would be the same as in the other chief centres. The Board decided to send Air. Alilrier's letter to the Department.
