Press Association. -WELLINGTON, yesterday. In a pre-sessional address last niglit Air. Barber, member for Newtown, quoted figures supplied by the Superintendent of the Department, showing tlie operations of the Advances te Workers Act, whch has been. in forco 5} month's. During that period 332 applications for advances coverin-' a total of £86,425, had been received. Of that number 225, covering a sum of £65,970, had been granted by the Board. Six applicants declined grants authorised,the amounts totalling £ISOO. The net number of applications authorised therefore is 249 and the sum involved £64,4iU, classified according to the provincial districts as follows: Auckland, numh',. 80 £20.080; Taranaki, 2, £275, Hawke’s Bay 15 £3855; Wellington, 75 £19,625; Marlborough 6, £14oo ; . Nelson 1, £225; Westland, 7, £1330, Canterbury, 49, £14,265; Otago 10, £2915; Southland, 10, £1945; totals, 255, £65,970. -
