Press Association. NAPIER, yesterday. . At the Supreme Court the grand jury found true bills in all cases except that of C. B. Thoriey, charged with assault oil a Maori. E. M. Tracey was found guilty of forgery and uttering and false pretences, sentence. being deferred. A fine of £5 was inflicted upon an old settler for having set a spring gun in his orchard to prevent fruit stealing. It was stated this was tho first case of tiie kind heai*d in the colony. Four youths pleaded guilty to carnally knowing a female, 14 years and 11 months. All were remanded for sentence. AA’illiam Charles "Williams, an offender, was convicted on six different charges of false pretences, and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, the sentences to be concurrent on each charge, lie being also declared to be an habitual criminal. Edward Mitchell Tracey was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for arson and three years for housebreaking. Prisoner, who is a young man, was referred to by Judge Cooper as a dangerous criminal. Joseph Marten found guilty of horse-stealing, got two years, and was declared to be an habitual criminal. The jury recommended the prisoner to mercy, but Martens’ .record showed sentences for vagrancy, horse-stealing, house-break-pig (one of ten years), and the Judge ignored tho recommendation.
, ■ , NAPIER, last night. At the Supreme Court to-day the .jury tailed to agree in the case Edward Pointon charged with theft, ft will be decided to-morrow morning whether a new trial will be ordered.
