The Wellington 'correspondent of die Auckland Star says:—Wellington Itugbyites in general express their satisfaction with the New Zealand team selected to meet N.S.W. and Queensland and a combination of the forces from tlioso States in July and August next. The exclusion, how-, ever, of such great forwards -as Cross end Byrno is commented upon, more particularly when it is reported that Mr. D. Gallagher, who saw the sat'ter playing* in a club match last Saturday, was very favorably impressed with his capabilities. Seeling at ais best was never superior to the detone representative ns ho is playing now. It is said that Byrno was not ■onsidered becauso ho had not signed he declaration on the day the team vns chosen. It will by leaving the atter player behind lose one of the lashiest loose forwards in the colony, exception is taken in different- quavers to the inclusion of George Spen■er, Tyler, Cunningham, and Jolintoue. Followers of the gamo say hat the attacking power of the 1903 earn and tho “All Blacks” was much ieadlier than is to bo found in the oresent combination. The president of the English football League gave some excellent advucc to referees in a speech he made eeeutly. There was a great difference ictween theory and practice. ROUGH PLAY. Press Association. STRATFORD, yesterday. At a meeting of the Taranaki Rugby Union it was decided to take firm steps to put down rough play. Several cases were dealt with, and after hearing lengthy evidence it was resolved to disqualify for life a plaver named H. Young, of Opunake, and that ho be warned off all football grounds, and that a copy of tko evidence be handed to the j>olice. In the cases of E. Howes, of Waimato, the Union was of the opinion that it was not proved to their satisfaction that Howes struck the blow that caused an injury to Young, and that Howes evidently struck Young at an earlier period of the game, and that ho be disqualified until the end of the 190 S season. S. Forsyth was also disqualified until the end of 1908. D. Sullivan and J. Pyne, for not leaving the field when requested by the referee, wore disqualified until the end of the present season. It was also resolved to ask the Southern Referees' Association to inquire into the caso of a referee in the OpunakeWaimate match, where rough play occurred, , W»e evidence in the hands of the Union tending to show that the referee did not exercise proper control over the.match. A Clifton player was suspended for one month from June-20, for failing to leave the field when ordered. RUGBY IN THE SCHOOLS. WELLINGTON, last night.
