THE WHANGARA ROAD.

HILL v. FLAT,

At the meeting of the County Council yesterday a letter was received from Mr. F. Fraser, Wliangara, who wrote as follows to the Engineer: “As we have recently had the old road line by the sawmill .defined, we would like you to inspect it. The surveyor says tlnit the- grade is not more than one in twelve in the steepest of it, so if the Council consider that practicable, we desire to Have the £IOO (which they were willing to give for the deviation) expended on the old line. This would, iierhajis, be . better than having to contend with claims for- land, fencing, etc., on the new line of road.” In justice to the Engineer the writer stated that a peg near the sawmill was altogether misleading, being about a chain above where it should have been. The Chairman said he had received a letter from Mr. Hurrey advocating a road near the river. The Engineer said the objection to the hill had been the grado, but tliero seemed to be some confusion about the fences under the existing survey. The ro'ad round the hill was undoubtedly the best. He had held the view that the grade was too steep; hut one-in twelve, as it appeared now, would not be too much.

The Chairman thought the flat road preferable. Cr. Boland favored the hill road. It would, lib pointed out, get the sun, which was an important consideration when unmetalled.

Cr. F. Lysnar said - the settlers should choose, and they evidently preferred the hill. ■ - The Chairman’said that in view of future ' maintenance the Council should only' spend on what was likely to be permanent work.

Cr. Matthews was against spending money on a temporary road. The settlers should liavo assistance, but only oil a road supported by the Engineer. ‘ r The' clerk’s minutes were referred to. and showed an offer of £IOO on the deviation on the settlers raisiug £3OO.

The Chairman said that if the settlers refused tjiat ended the matter. Cr. Boland said the Council had agreed to give £4O for the hill road. Cr. W. D. Lysnar said that ho would support Qr. Boland’s view, as the expense of the alternative road appeared to be too heavy. A motion moved by Cr. Boland, and seconded by Cr. Lysnar, was carried, granting a subsidy of £ for’£ up to £4O “for the hill road. "'(Jr. Matthews dissented.
