Although May is generally considered to bo the beginning of winter it turned out to bo the best month of the year in this part of thedistrict, only 5 inches of rain falling, distributed ovor 17 days, the heaviest fall being 1.05 inches on tlio 24th. To Araron residents have hit upon a new idea, and a good olio, for a seaside settlement. They liavo formed a Launch Club, and by tlio aid ot subscriptions, and tlio proceeds ot a dance, liavo been able to placo an order with an Auckland firm tor no horso-powor oil launch, suitable for this roadstead. It is to bo used for fishing excursions, etc., and to run one to meet steamers, otic.,. in cases of emergency or when required, ami will be a useful addition to the district. A shell to keep it in is being built by working bees. Quito a change lias taken place in the personnel of the coastal steamer Haupiri, much to tlio regret cm local residents, both Captain Campbell and Mr Perotti, second mate, having left her, after being a number ot years on this run, during which they have made many friends, who will .join in wishing them succes sin the future.
