A FEROCIOUS INTRUDER.

DESPERATE STRUGGLE IN THE DARK.

Press Association. AUCKLAND, last night. A resident of Alfrea-strcet, Ouoliunga, was awakened this morning between 5 and 6 o’clock by hearing a noise in tho kitchen. Grasping a revolver and proceeding to investigate, ho found a strange man in the house. On the intruder being "asked his business bo replied, “Surely a man can get a feed in Ins own houso,” and it is alleged immediately closed with his questioner. A-dosporato strugglo ensued, during which chairs were broken and tables, overturned, but ovontuallv the stranger was ovorpoword, and Constable McGlono being sont- for tho intruder was arrested.

From inquires made this morning it appeared that tho man had sat for some time on the verandah, and had then got into the house, probably by a door which was not securely fastened.

The contention is that a mistake was made in getting into the wrong house, as nothing in tho shape of burglary was attempted. The arrest- *?,. had only been living in the district about a fortnight. Tho matter was brought up at the Oiifkunga Police Court this morning, but when accused was called ho was too ill to appear, and the case was adjourned.
