AUCKLAND, yesterday. There is an abnormal epidemic of siqkness amongst children, measles, whooping cough, , and chicken-pox bavin" reduced tho school attendance so; much that the teachers, whose salaries are based on the average at-, tendance, suffer severely. Over 300 .children are absent from Mount Eden school, nearly half tho average attendance, and tho school has been 'closed. The question of extending the ramifications of tlio New Zealand Defence League of New Zealand was discussed at a meeting, last night. It was debided to hold a public meeting at an’early date,to consider the formation of a branch of the League in Wellington, and a committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements. 1 DUNEDIN, yesterday.
