A special meeting of the Wharf Laborers’ Union will be held this evening.
A tonnis club is being formed in Wairoa. It is intended to have tw. asphalt courtß ready for next season.
Members of the local H.A.C.B.S. Lodge are notified by advertisement in this issue that the quarterly meeting will be held to-night.
A meeting of ladies willing to help iu connection with the School Bath Social will be held in Townley’s Hall at 3.30 o’clock this afternoon.
The Rev. L. Dawson Thomas states that over £4O has been donated towards the extension of the church, and the total sum now stands at over £620.
There are now three mills in the Nuhnka district. Building timber promises to become cheaper, and it is exDectod that it will be sold at 5s per hundred feet.
A social, which promises to be very successful, is to be held in Wliinray’s Hall this evening. From Bto 9 o’clock the floor will be occupied by juieniles and from 10 o’clock onwards the hall, will be used by adults. An advertisement appears elsewhere.
The Cook County Council meets this morning, and the Borough Council in the evening. During the afternoon a meeting of the local bodies’ committee will probably be held to consider Mr. Rees’ scheme. The Hospital Trustees meet iu the evening.
At the euchre party and dance -to be held shortly by Mr. Segedin, proprietor of the Victoria Billiard Saloon, the winner of the billiard tour•ljfment whioh is at present in progress at the saloon, will be presented with the gold medal which --, lias been donated by Mr. Segedin, and is oil view in Messrs. Sbierlaw and Co.’s window. Full particulars of the social will be announced later. At t-lie Police Court yesterday morning, before Messrs. R. Johnston and W. Akroyd, J’s.P., William Ives, charged with assaulting Gordon Taylor Ball, pleaded guilty. The sergt. explained that the assaulted man was barman in .the Albion Hotel, who endeavored to eject, accused but ho resisted, arid then committed the offence. Ives asked for leniency, and he was fined 10s, 2s costs, or 48 hours’ imprisonment. A Maori first offender, for drunkennes, was fined ss, with 2s costs, or 24 hours’ imprisonment.
An elderly man named George Pevreal was charged at the Police Court yesterday morning, with committing a grossly indecent act in Lowe street. He said he knew noabout it, but entered a plea of guilty. Constable. O’Hara gave evidence as to the offence. The Bench regretted sending a' respectable looking man to prison, and ordered him to come up for sentence if called upon. He was fined 10s, 2s costs, or 48 hours on a charge of drunkenness, there being several previous convictions.
Tho half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Gisborne Lodge, Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, was held last night, Bro. M. Cox, N.G., presiding. The election of officers resulted as follows: Grand Master, Bro.. M. Cox; Noble Grand. Bro.. S. McPherson; Vice-Grand, Bro. L. Sharland; Secretary, Bro. McConnell. It was decided to appoint Dr. Schumacher lodge doctor in addition to the present doctor. It was also decided to withdraw from the United Friendly Societies’ Conference. A committee was set up to go into tho question of establishing a hospital fund among the old members of the Lodge.
The Gisborne Debating Society had a most successful gathering last'evening The subject set down lor the evening was “The Merchant of Venice.” A number of tho members took part in the well-known drama, Mrs. Collins as Portia and Dr. Collins as Sbylock gaining ft large share of praise for their clever interpretation. The other members acquitted themselves with credit. The subject for next Monday evening will be “Is Reading a Greater Educational Medium than Observation ” Mr. Kimble and Mr. Lawless are to uphold the different mediums. The president of the society, Mr. J. A. Connell. tendered his resignation at the meeting and regret was expressed that his duties compelled him to resign. He waß asked by the members to retain the position till the end of the present term and was unanimously elected a life member of the Society.
