Tlic Tourist Department intends, if possible, to p'rovfde against the loss of fish at Tarawera and other streams this year, by limiting and improving the spawning ground (says the llotorua Times). Non- the spawning season is at hand, the fish are making desperate attempts to make their way up stream, with the result that numbers are stranded. If any fish succeed in getting up they very often never return to the lake. Numbers of fine fish have already been lost this way, and, in addition, when in the very shallow water the hawks frighten them on to the sides of the streams, where they devour them at their leisure.
