West End attacked with spirit, Roderick and Hooper dribbling I the ball well ill Kia Kalla’s quarters. I but Bright came to the rescue and I sent the ball out of danger with a I fine drive. Campbell next shone out. I sprinting up the field where Oliver, I who was playing a great defensive game, saved the situation. Not- to be denied the Kia Kalia's speedy vanguard returned to the attack and Woodward sent the ball into 'A est End’s circle where Wi cleverly saved. Rice carried play down the field and passing well to McLacblan. Ivtu Kaha’s goal was assailed. A free-lnt for “sticks” brought relief. A fiue passing run by the Kia Kalia vanguard enabled Pollock to shoot- a fine voal. Shortly afterwards half-time was called and the teams changed Upon resuming West End attacked, Rice doing some fine work. Some fierce fighting occurred in Kia Kalia s circle hut the defence was too sound. Rice at this point got a lilt on the knee which incapacitated him for a few moments. Campbell raced the ball well'up the field where Pollock took lip the running and had a shot at goal, but Wi proved a full-back of the barndoor order and stopped cleverly. Pirie carried the ball out o F danger and passed to Hooper who was beaten for possession by Campbell who carried play back again Hooper made a fine run and looked like scoring but Garrett saved by a fine drive. Coleman was instrumental’ in transferring play into West End territory where AVittv made a fine fun and scored a good goal. Shortly afterward Bright, by a dashing piece of play shot another goal. Kia Kalia were attacking hotly and the West End rearguard were hard at work trying to stem the torrent. Wi stopped a deadly rush by Witty . and Grant, but Bright sent the hail fairly between the uprights scoring Ivia Kalia’s fourth goal. For the winners all played well and it would be invidious to single one out above his fellows. For tlia. losers Hooper, Olsen and Rice of the'forwards and Oliver and Wi of the backs were,the pick. CITY v. TE RAU.
At Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon City met and defeated Te Rau by 3 goals to 2. This game was a fine exposition of hockey, and from a spectator’s standpoint was of a very interesting nature. Some very good combination was shown on both sides, and the brilliant individual efforts of some of the players called forth rounds of applause from the onlookers.
From the bully-off Bayly and Grinliuton carried play into Te Raids stronghold, where Sargisson brought relief with a fine drive. Alutu with a fine dribbling rush took play well up the field, but Armstrong sent it back again with a powerful drive. Bushnell gained possession, and rasping the ball up the field in great form transferred to Pine, who sent it into City’s circle, where a fierce tussle took place. J. Alartin, who was City’s goalkeeper, was doing great work on defence, and succeeded in preventing a score. Armstrong and Wilson initiated a fine passing rush, which carried tho ball the whole length of the ground, and enabled Grinlinton to score a fine goal. Brown and AVi Friday were instrumental in placing City’s goal in danger, but Alartin saved with a nice drive. Halftime was then called.
, Upon resuming Te Rau made the •pace very willing, and some fine play eventuated, the ball travelling up and down the field with lightning rapidity. Heke and Ha'kawai raced the ball on to City’s line, where Smith brought relief by driving the ball out at centre. Ellison and Alutu carried play into City’s circle, where Ellison shot a lovely goal, bringing the scores even. From a fine passing rush by tho City vanguard Smith shot a lovely goal. Not to be outdone, To Rau rallied, and, making great -play, rushed the ball into the enemy’s line, where Bushnell shot a fine coal. Shortly after this Armstrong dribbled right through the Te Rau backs, and scored City’s third goal, leaving City victorious by 3 goals to 2.
For the winners, AVilson, Bayly, and Armstrong were the pick of a good lot.
For the losers, Brown, Pine, and Allen played well. Air. Jas. Sadler carried out the duties of referee in a capable manner, while Alessrs. Alurphy and Smith were the touch, judges.
