SUPREME COURT.

Press Association

PA LMERSTON, yesterday

A sitting of the Supreme Court opened this moring before Mr. Jus-t-ice Cooper, and true bills were found against Richard Daly, for bigamy; F. Cross and B. Morse, theft from a dwelling; L. M. Murray, cattle stealing ; Albert Lovelock, forgery. The latter pleaded guilty, and received two years, and a similar sentence was imposed on Fredk. Cross for theft from a dwelling. Morse was remanded for the report of the probation officer.

The prosecution in a bigamy case broke down very unexpectedly at’ the Supreme l Court this morning. The first witness for the Crown produced a copy of a certificate of accused’s former marriage in 1895, to which Mr Innes, counsel for tlio defence, objected, pointing out- that accused (Daly) was referred to as “Richard” and “Robert” Daly in the same certificate. His Honor, after scrutinising the certificate, remarked that it was a strange blunder. ’He commented upon the gross carelessness of some official which led to a break-

down of the prosecution. The Crowji Prosecutor intimated that he could go no further in the case, and his Honor directed the jury to acquit accused, which was done, and Daly was discharged. A verdict of not guilty was returned in the case of Christopher Ryan, charged with stealing a gold watch and £7 at Halcombe, on April Ist. Patrick Brosnalian, charged with obtaining £5 from :T. C. ICeeting at Linton by’ means of false pretences, was found guilty and remanded for sentence to-morrow. Accused sold a chain represented to be gold which was hall-marked and was only worth Is 3d.. "
