Mr. Haldane, in the, Army debate, said he appreciated the desire generally expressed in the House to retain the national or special, description of corps, but he declined an amendment making it statutory. He added that tho retention was doubtless possible in many cases. Mr. Balfour suggested that the militia of England and Scotland should be allowed, as the Irish would supply drafts and serve as units. Mr. Haldane, amid cheers, said he [ recognised the importance of the suggestion, and promised earnest consideration.
