The secretary of the Southland Acclimatisation Society (Mr. E. Russell) is firmly convinced that, the law prohibiting the export of trout from the colony is being evaded. Fishermen, lie informed tho society’s council, actually boasted to him about it. Cases of trout, with a few blue cod spread ostentatiously over the top, were being shipped away. He considered that if a stiff export duty were imposed the evil would be more effectively dealt with, as the Customs officers would then take steps to protect their department. He considered it very desirable that if trout were to he sold, they should be disposed of in the colony, where they had been ac- . climatised at great expense. The council decided to support the imposition of an export duty. .
