DEBATING SOCIETY.

The usual weekly meeting of the . Gisborne Debating Society was. held last evening in the Choral Hall, there being a large number present. The question under discussion was, “Should. Bachelors be Taxed?” Mr. J. G. Cox took the affirmatives, .land Mr. McLean the negative. Mr/Cox dealt with the subject in a very able manner, demonstrating the fact that lie had given the matter his close attention. Owing to the fact that a large number of the members present being bachelors, Mr. McLean had rather an easy time,'his listeners punctuating his remarks with applause. Several of the members spoke both for and against, and Dr. Collins, who spoke for several minutes, convulsed his audience with laughter at his clever handling of the subject. The negatives won by a majority ol seven. The subject for next Monday evening will be “The Merchant of Venice,” and a very interesting evening isvcxpeeted.
