GOVERNMENT LAND VALUATIONS.

COMPLAINT OF OWNERS. Press Association. HOKITIKA, last night. During the last four days the Assessment Court lias been engaged in reviewing the Government valuations in the county of Westland. A feature of the proceedings was the fact that in cue riding the County Council entered 235 objections on the ground that the valuation was too iow. Except in two instances the objections were successful and the total valuation of the riding in' question was increased by about £27,500. The settlers showed a good deal of opjosicion and attended in force. The proceedings excited a large amount of local interest. The Government inspecting valuer was present aod fought to sustain the local Government- valuer’s estimates in opposition to the effort of the local body to have tlie values raised. The Council engaged out side and local experts to support its case. .
